Poly Tarps

If you are a camper, you know the experience to be had with tents in the rain. Unless you have the really high end and sealed seams that come with expensive equipment, you've been wet. Even with good tents, unless you have a poly tarp shelter, you've been stuck inside on those rainy days. Use poly tarps on poles or hung from trees to protect a camp fire, keep leaves and debris from the site, or just have a place to sit and not be confined to the area of your tent. Tarp camping can be had by stringing up several tarps to protect you from the sun as well as the rain. Just be sure to tie them to poles and not to each other. In that case, if one is accidentally pulled down, the rest will not follow.

A heavy duty silver tarp is great for those windy days. They not only protect your privacy, but will reflect the heat and light from the fire, warming the space. Erect poly tarps high enough to allow the smoke to escape, and keep curious flying creatures at bay. Heavy duty tarps can also be used to redirect wind and discourage insects.

Remember one thing about putting tarps up: try to tie them to trees or bushes when possible first, and then add poles for strength enhancement. A heavy duty silver tarp can make cool shelters if you tie down the ends to where you want water to run off. For the other end, secure heavy objects (small logs, etc.) to the respective ropes and throw them over stable limbs, then tighten the lines.
