Tarps for hay bales.
If hay cannot be stored in a shed, the next best way to protect a season’s work is with a tarp. If hay is left with no cover at all, and exposed to elements when it needs to be sold or fed to animals, mold and bacteria can cause spoilage and weather related damage can also destroy part of a season’s crop of hay. Just based on weather damage alone, a season’s worth of hay can be reduced by 12 to 20 percent. In addition, covering hay results in better quality hay to be sold and a higher market value for the product.
Covering hay is based on the shape of the stacks. If the hay is in a long row, two smaller tarps should be able to completely cover it. For square stacks, the amount of hay needing coverage should be measured and the tarp size should be round up to the closest measurement. For irregular stacks, one of our large size tarps, either 50x100 or 100x100 feet, should cover the hay. Although many types of heavy duty poly tarps can cover hay, the recommended one is our silver heavy duty tarp.
