Covering an RV with a tarp for the winter is the best alternative to an expensive fitted cover. For the best protection, a tarp should be tied down securely using all grommets, but the tarp should not be tied tight enough so that air space is eliminated. Leave a small amount of air space but also make sure that the RV is completely dry.

Before securing a tarp on an RV, strips of wood, such as 2x4s, should be lined on the top of the RV before the tarp goes down. Air circulation should be on both ends of the RV, but air circulation is done best by a small gap between the tarp and the RV, not a flap from an untied grommet.

Although many tarps can protect an RV, the best long term coverage is done by white or silver heavy duty poly tarps.
