Tarps & Covers
Tarps and covers, in many instances, are one in the same material. Made out of polyethylene, canvas, or vinyl, tarps protect an investment against the elements. Whether by itself and secured in place or part of a structure, polyethylene tarps are treated to be waterproof, UV resistant, mildew resistant, and rot proof. The material, no matter if on a truck bed or a roof or surrounding a boat, blocks out sunlight and water and lets air circulate underneath.
Tarps and covers commonly protect cars and seasonal vehicles in various types of weather. When left outdoors for an extended period of time, such vehicles are vulnerable to the elements and experience damage. The paint starts to fade, the material cracks, and mildew, mold, or dry rot begins to form. In extreme cases, interior plastic parts may also crack. When tarps and covers protect such vehicles, the material blocks out the elements, extending the lifespan of the boat, car, or RV.
While general tarps can protect any of these vehicles, tarp manufacturers often offer these covers in specific sizes. Boat covers and tarps, for example, are designed specifically for the dimensions of the vehicle. RV covers, as well, are longer and wider than typical poly tarps.
By themselves, tarps are ideal covers for homes and trucks. While not designed to fully fit over each, poly tarps are secured to damaged roofs after a tornado, hurricane, or similar natural disaster. The polyethylene material prevents more water from entering and damaging the interior of the home and serves as temporary protection until a contractor assesses the damage and repairs the roof.
Similarly, large poly or mesh tarps are covers for dump truck beds. Materials, such as rocks, gravel, trash, or asphalt, carried in the bed of a dump truck need to stay inside. Fines often result when any of these materials falls out, becoming litter or hazards to pedestrians and motorists. Mesh tarps, which allow light to pass through, are best for materials that can be exposed to water. Poly tarps, however, are better for materials, such as asphalt and wood, that must not be exposed to moisture.
Although used on their own, tarps and covers are often paired with a metal canopy frame to protect an investment. Attached to a powder-coated or galvanized steel frame, poly tarps and covers keep water and moisture out, and the metal frame holds up to high winds and heavy snow.
